The WAMTI–Ketapang Blue Carbon Initiative (WKBCI) is a community-driven platform dedicated to the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of mangrove and coastal ecosystems in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Through collaboration among local communities, government institutions, researchers, universities, and development partners, WKBCI seeks to demonstrate how climate action, biodiversity conservation, and community prosperity can advance together.

WKBCI was initiated in July 2025 through discussions among members of the Wahana Masyarakat Tani Indonesia (WAMTI) and fellow conservation advocates in Ketapang. The initiative was founded by Agusdin Pulungan, Yudo Sudarto, and Khairani, who shared a common vision of establishing a locally led blue carbon initiative that would place coastal communities at the center of environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

About WAMTI

WAMTI is an Indonesian community-based organization that works to strengthen rural and coastal communities through sustainable natural resource management, community empowerment, environmental conservation, and livelihood development. Over the years, WAMTI has been involved in supporting local initiatives related to agriculture, fisheries, community capacity building, and environmental awareness. Guided by the belief that lasting conservation can only be achieved through strong community participation, WAMTI has consistently promoted approaches that balance ecological sustainability with social and economic well-being.

Building upon this experience, WAMTI envisioned WKBCI as a platform that would specifically focus on the protection and restoration of blue carbon ecosystems while creating opportunities for local communities to benefit from sustainable fisheries, ecosystem services, scientific research, and climate finance mechanisms.

Our Journey

Recognizing the immense ecological and economic importance of Ketapang's mangrove ecosystems, the founders envisioned a collaborative initiative that could connect local knowledge with scientific expertise and policy support.

In January 2026, WKBCI began engaging with the Government of Ketapang Regency to explore opportunities for collaboration. This was followed by discussions with the Fisheries Service of Ketapang in May 2026, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable fisheries, mangrove conservation, and community-based coastal development.

Today, WKBCI continues to develop partnerships with government agencies, universities, research institutions, NGOs, and international organizations to advance a shared vision for sustainable coastal management and climate resilience in Ketapang.
